When you first start Photoshop, you’re presented with an amazing array of tools, menus, and palettes, (check out Chapter 2 for an introduction to them). Until you open an image, those interesting features and tools won’t do much — it’s like having an easel, a full set of brushes, and a whole paint box full of paints, but no canvas.
In this chapter, I explain how to create a new, blank canvas for an image you want to paint from scratch. I also show you how to open existing images using commands and by using the File Browser. Then I explain how to move around an image, zoom in to see details, turn on rulers, grids, and guides, and add notes to an image. Finally, you find out how to save an image, create a back-up copy, close the image, and shut down Photoshop.
