Getting Productive with Tool Presets

You can save and reuse tool settings, just like any other type of preset. For example, I work with images for both the Web and for print. So I have a few crop settings that I use repeatedly — 144 x 216 pixels at 72 dpi, 3.25 x 4 inches at 300 dpi, 400 x 300 pixels at 72 dpi, 5 x 7 inches at 300 dpi, and so on. I used to have to specify those settings manually each time I wanted to use them. Now, I just save them all as presets, and so can you.

You also can use presets for type, custom brushes, selection tools, gradients, and pattern shape options, to just name a few of the endless possibilities. In addition to being great time savers, presets allow you to replicate certain effects quickly. No more saving sticky notes to remind you how to create a fantastic effect.

The Tool Presets palette is used to manage saved tool presets. Click the Tool Presets tab in the Palette Well on the Options bar to open the Tool Presets palette, as shown in Figure 2-10. You also can access tool presets by clicking the left-most button on the Options bar (refer to Figure 2-2).

  • You can pull the Tool Presets palette out of the Palette Well by dragging its tab out to the image window.

  • To create a new preset, select the tool you want to use to create the preset; then set the tool options using the Options bar. Click the Create New Tool Preset button. Enter a name for your preset in the dialog box that appears, and then click OK.

  • You can delete a tool preset by clicking the preset, and then clicking the Delete tool preset button at bottom right of the Tool Presets palette.

  • Put a check the Current Tool Only check box to only see the presets for the tool that is currently selected.

  • Use the Preset Manager to organize presets by tool type, delete presets, load preset libraries, and to set how the tool presets are displayed in the Tool presets palette. To open the Preset Manager, choose Edit→Preset Manager.
