The Software Packages to Obtain

This project requires several software packages not normally installed on a system. These packages are the Apache Web server development RPM, the PHP source code, IMP source code, IMAP development RPM, and the Freetype development RPM. All these packages are available on the Web.

Apache Development RPM

The Apache Web server software and the Apache development rpm are included on the enclosed CD. Install the development rpm that matches the Apache Web server you have installed on your computer. If you don't, this project will not work. The latest RPMS for the Apache Web server under Red Hat Linux are available at ftp:// ftp.redhat.com. The updated RPMS for Apache for Red Hat 6.1 are included on the enclosed CD-ROM.

PHP3 Source Code

The PHP source code is on the enclosed CD, and is available from the PHP Web site at http://www.php.net. As of this writing, PHP version 4 is almost ready. You will probably be able to upgrade both IMP and PHP after this project is installed and working. I don't recommend you do that at this point.

The philosophy is "make it work." After it works, you can "improve" it. The just released version of PHP has problems and does not have a track record. After the project is working correctly, you can upgrade to the new version of PHP. If the new version of PHP fails because of an unexpected bug, you can always backtrack to the version you know works.

If you have not copied the PHP source code tarball into your imp directory, do so now.

IMP Source Code

The IMP source code is on the enclosed CD, and it is also available from the IMP Web site, http://www. horde .org. Copy the IMP source code tarball to your imp directory. We will untar it later.

IMAP Development RPM

The IMAP development RPM must be installed, and the version must match the IMAP version installed. If you have not already installed the IMAP packages, do so now. The IMAP packages are available at ftp:// ftp.redhat.com. They are supplied on the enclosed CD-ROM.

Freetype Development RPM

The Freetype Development RPM is not typically installed by the Red Hat installation routines. If it is not installed, install it now. You can download the Freetype development RPM from the ftp site at ftp.redhat.com.
