4.37. What is the relationship between ESA, standards, and commoditization?

ESA could not exist without standards. Enterprise services are built upon and depend upon common standards such as web services for general functionality, XML for messaging, and Java and other programming languages for creating the services themselves. ESA creates an environment in which all of these standards coexist and interoperate, and it is inevitable that this interoperability will become standardized (take, for example, standards such as RosettaNet for process orchestration in the high-tech industries), leading to the evolution of the service grid.

Within the grid, automation using enterprise services ceases to be a differentiating factor. What matters will be how you choose to organize your processes and how you choose to structure your business. ESA will have simply become the platform on which all of this happens.
