Step 9: Look Ahead: Be Prepared with Alternatives

Overview

Constant change is here to stay.

—Anonymous

Effective solutions to tough problems often require midcourse corrections. If the final solution were clear, the issue wouldn't have been a tough one to begin with. So don't be surprised if you start implementing your solution and find that change becomes necessary. In fact, prepare for it.

If you have followed the previous step completely, you will have one or more acceptable alternatives to your first-choice pick. Choice gives you power—the power to follow your hopes, learn from change, and adapt successfully.

People naturally want their chosen solution to succeed. They've worked hard to come to agreement on it and they have a stake in making sure it resolves the issue. But when there's only one agreed-upon solution, it can be difficult to recognize that it's not working. Denial sets in. Participants may disregard or downplay contrary information. Furthermore, those who do perceive shortcomings as a solution unfolds may hold back from telling others for fear of appearing disloyal.

Change is frightening unless you have a backup solution. So, no matter what your feelings are, stick with the process and arm yourself with one or more alternatives. Then, monitor how your data and experience fit not only with the solution you've chosen but also with the acceptable alternatives. If you pack a reserve along with your main parachute, you'll take bigger leaps with less fear.
