Add Line Numbers to a Document


You can add numbers to the left edge of every line of your document. Line numbers are particularly useful for proofreading; proofreaders can refer to locations in the document by their line numbers.

  1. Click File.

  2. Click Page Setup.

    The Page Setup dialog box appears.

  3. Click the Layout tab.

  4. Click Line Numbers.

    The Line Numbers dialog box appears.

  5. Click Add line numbering (image from book changes to image from book).

    image from book You can specify line numbering options here.

  6. Click an option (image from book changes to image from book) to specify whether line numbering should be continuous or start over on each page or section.

  7. Click OK twice.

  8. Click image from book to view the document in Print Layout mode.

What does the From text option control in the Line Numbers dialog box?

Using this option, you can specify the position in inches in the left margin where line numbers will appear. Exercise caution, however; if you specify too large a distance, the line numbers will not appear or print.

How do I remove line numbers?

Follow steps 1 to 5; when you click the Add line numbering, image from book changes to image from book, turning off line numbering. Click OK twice to save your changes.
