Add Page Numbers to a Document


You can have Word automatically print page numbers on the pages of your document. As you edit your document to add or remove text, Word adjusts the document and the page numbers accordingly.

  1. Click Insert.

  2. Click Page Numbers.

    The Page Numbers dialog box appears.

  3. Click here and select a location on the page for the page number.

  4. Click here and select the position on the line for the page number.

  5. Click OK.

  6. Click the Print Layout icon (image from book) to display the document in Print Layout view.

How can I start each section of my document with Page 1?

If your company’s style calls for each chapter starting on Page 1, you can break the document into sections and use these steps to start each section on Page 1.

  1. Place the insertion point in the first section of your document and complete steps 1 to 4.

  2. Click Format.

  3. In the Page Numbering section, click Start at and type 1 in the box.

  4. Click OK twice.

  5. Repeat these steps for each subsequent section of your document.
