Summary

By now you should be able to write your own photon mapping application (just kidding). But yes, this chapter has covered the general concept of pho-ton mapping. It's not a hard idea to grasp and I'm sure most of you have an idea what it is by now. The photon map can be visualized as a list of predetermined paths calculated and saved from the light sources to the surfaces in the scene as well as from the observer to the objects in the scene. Meaning the photon map is used twiceonce to scatter the light and once to find the reflected lighting on surfaces. The photon map represents the incoming flux of each surface in the scene. The photon mapping process is conducted in two major stages. The first stage to build the photon map is by tracing rays from the light sources to the surfaces in the scene. The next stage is to perceive the scene as the observer by tracing rays from the view plane into the scene to find the radiance of each pixel on the view plane. The next chapters take a detailed look at photon tracing and photon rendering .
