Summary

This chapter provided a detailed overview about photon tracing. Photon tracing is the process of constructing a photon map of light paths taken from the light source to objects in the scene. The chapter explained the overall process required to implement photon tracing. You started learning about simple scattering and then moved over to proportional scattering because it's a better approach to getting quicker results with less processing time. You also learned about the nature of a photon as it intersects different types of materials in the scene. You now understand what happens to the photon when it hits specular and diffuse surfaces and now know that photons can be absorbed into objects. You've learned that the physical outcome of a photon on a partial diffuse and specular surface is based on a probabilistic solution. In the next chapter, you'll complete the second part of the photon-mapping algorithm.
