Summary

To design an RFID-enabled solution that can take full advantage of the technology, it is essential to understand both RFID system components and their functional interactions. In this chapter, we discussed the common components of all RFID systems, including both hardware (tag, reader, antennae, and host computer) and software (operating system, middleware, and host application). We also showed how these components integrate and work with each other. An overview of a standardized architecture based on these components was also provided during the discussion of the EPCglobal Network.

Successful RFID implementations also require a clear understanding of standards, people and process reengineering, cost-benefit issues, and security. You are now ready to explore these crucial topics, starting in the next chapter with a detailed discussion of standards and their role in successful RFID deployments.
