Maximizing the Log Service

After Contribute is fully integrated into an organization, you'll want a way to see how it's being used. CPS includes a Log service as a key component. The Log service maintains an ongoing record of all Contribute activities, complete with key data such as when a Contribute-related event occurred, which files were affected, and which personnel were involved.

CPS includes a Log Viewer application that displays the data in a highly readable, completely sortable format in a browser window. The Log Viewer output can be printed, or the entire log can be saved as a comma-separated value file (CSV). Numerous programsincluding spreadsheets and databasescan open CSV files and manipulate the data within. As you'll see in this lesson, you can even import such a file into Dreamweaver for display as structured data in a table.

1.

In Contribute, choose Edit > Administer Websites > DesignDeploy. When the Administer Website dialog box opens, switch to the Publishing Services category and click the Publishing Services Console link. Enter the password defined during installationdesigndeployand click Log In when the login screen appears in your system browser.

You could, of course, launch the Publishing Services Console from the standard Start button (Start > All Programs > Macromedia > Macromedia Contribute Publishing Services > Administer Contribute Publishing Services). You could get the same result by entering a URL in your browser's location field (https://yourComputerName:8900/contribute/admin/server.cfm).

2.

In the browser window displaying the Contribute Publishing Services console, switch to the Website Settings category. Click View Log. After the Log Viewer Web application executes, the results are displayed in a new browser window.

Initially, the log displays all the data currently stored; however, there are a number of controls available for sorting and limiting the data displayed. The Show drop-down list offers quite a variety of options for filtering the log information. Additionally, each of the column headers acts as a sorting mechanism. Let's present and print a view displaying all the entries concerning documents sent for review, sorted from the oldest to the newest.

3.

From the Show list, choose Send for Review; the list is automatically filtered to display just those entries with Send for Review events. Click the Date/Time link to reverse the sort order. Press Ctrl+P (Command+P) to send the page to the printer.

Printing various views from the Log Viewer application is great for quick snapshots of Contribute activity. However, reporting sometimes requires more in-depth analysis. For these situations, you can save the entire log as a structured text file.

4.

Click the Download Log File link. When the log text file opens in your default text editor, choose File > Save As and store the file in the admin folder of your local DesignDeploy site root as log.txt. Choose File > Quit to close the text editor.

Tip

Another way to get the file is to right-click (Control-click) the Download Log File link and choose Save Target As or Save As to store the text file directly on your computer.

When the Download Log File link is selected, CPS outputs the log data in a structured data file. Each record is on a separate line, and each data column in the record is separated by a comma and delimited by quotation marks, creating comma-separated values.

5.

In Dreamweaver's Files panel, expand the site root, if necessary, and then expand the admin folder. Double-click log_report.htm to open it. Delete the placeholder text in the mainContent editable region.

Dreamweaver includes a feature for incorporating structured data into Web pages. The Import Tabular Data command works with any CSV text file, regardless of the delimiter used. All of the data is automatically put into a table.

6.

Choose File > Import > Tabular Data. In the Import Tabular Data dialog box, click Browse to open the Select File dialog box; expand the admin folder in the site root and choose log.txt. Click OK to dismiss the dialog box. From the Delimiter list, choose Comma. Make sure that the Table Width option is set to Fit to Data. Leave both Cell Padding and Cell Spacing empty. Set the Format Top Row list box to Bold, and leave Border set to 1. Click OK when you're done.

Dreamweaver imports the entire log and creates a table with the settings chosen to hold it. The table itself is pretty generic and needs to be formatted to enhance its readability.

7.

Place your cursor in any of the date/time entries (not the header). From the Property inspector, enable the No Wrap option; repeat for the entries in the Username column. With your cursor anywhere in the table, choose Commands > Format Table. When the Format Table dialog box opens, choose the AltRows:Blue&Yellow entry from the list of presets. In the Row Colors section, leave the First color field set to #FFFFCC. For the Second color field, click the color swatch and use the eyedropper to sample the color from the background color of the page header (#ADADD6). For Top row, set Align to None, Text Style to Bold, Bg Color to #000044 and Text Color to #FFFFFF. Set the Left ColAlign list to None and Text Style to Regular. Enter 0 in the Table Border field and click OK. Choose File > Save to store your page.

Much of the basic formatting of this table comes from CSS styling applied to the template. Naturally, you can modify any of these values to achieve a style consistent with your site.

Reports created as HTML pages are best posted to an administrative section of the Web for perusing. To print such a file, preview the page in your browser and choose File > Print.
