Preparing to Test in Contribute

To understand the way SSIs are experienced within Contributeand design implementations in other lessons in this bookyou have to establish a Contribute connection to the current site. From the Dreamweaver perspective, three basic steps are required:

1.

Enable Contribute compatibility in Dreamweaver's Site Definition dialog box.

2.

Export a Contribute connection key to your local system.

3.

In Contribute, import the connection key.

After this process is complete, you can design sites in Dreamweaver, deploy them locally, and test them in Contributeall on your own development system.

1.

In Dreamweaver, choose Site > Manage Site. When the Manage Sites dialog box opens, make sure that the current site is Design_Deploy and then choose Edit.

2.

The Site Definition dialog box opens next. On the Advanced tab, choose the Contribute category and select the Enable Contribute Compatibility option. Dreamweaver displays an alert that informs you of the requirements for Contribute compatibility: The use of Design Notes must be enabled and set to upload, and check in/check out must be turned on. Click OK to continue.

Dreamweaver uses Design Notes to hold information about published files, including whether they're currently available to be edited. When you OK the alert, Dreamweaver automatically makes Design Notes available, simultaneously setting them up to be published to your remote site. Dreamweaver also enables check in/check out, and displays the Contribute Site Settings dialog box so that you can provide a bit more information.

3.

Fill out the Contribute Site Settings dialog box by providing a check-out name and an email address. Choose a name that indicates that you're working with Dreamweaver, such as Your Name_DW. Click OK when you're done.

After you check out a page for editing, your check-out name is displayed in Dreamweaver's Site panel and (in Contribute) at the top of the page when anyone browses to it. It's a good idea to associate your check-out name with Dreamweaver here so that you can tell at a glance which program you used to work on the page. In both programs, your email address is provided as a mailto: link to facilitate team communication.

4.

Click Test to verify that the current Site Root URL is correct; Dreamweaver tells you whether the connection was successful.

If Dreamweaver could not complete the connection, make sure that your local Web server is running. An easy way to verify this is to open any browser and enter the following URL: http://localhost/. If the Web server is running, the current home page for your Web server is displayed; if the Web server is not running, you'll get a "page not found" error.

5.

Click Administer Site in Contribute to open the Administer Website dialog box.

Because you've launched it from Contribute, Administer Website might take a few seconds to appear.

6.

Click Send Connection Key to display the Export Key File Wizard (known as the Assistant on the Macintosh). On the Welcome page of the wizard, make sure that the Yes option to send the current connection settings is chosen, and then click Next.

7.

When the Role Information page appears, choose Administrator from the list. Click Next to move to the Connection Key Information page. Choose the "Save to local machine" option and enter designdeploy as a password to unlock the connection key. Re-enter the password and click Next to move to the Summary page. Verify that all information is correct and click Done. When the Export Connection Key dialog box appears, accept the default location and choose Save.

The major work in Dreamweaver is now complete; all that remains is to close the various dialog boxes.

8.

In the Administer Website dialog box, click Close after the connection key has been saved. Choose OK to close the Site Definition dialog box. In the Manage Sites dialog box, click Done to confirm that your work is complete.

The final step in this administrative setup procedure is to install the newly minted connection key in Contribute.

9.

In Contribute, choose Edit > My Connections. When the My Connections dialog box opens, choose Import. The Select Connection Key dialog box opens so you can navigate to the just-saved file. When you locate the file, select it and click Open. The Import Connection Key dialog box appears. Enter your Contribute user name (enter a name different from the one chosen for your Dreamweaver check-out name, such as Your Name_CT). Type your email address in the appropriate field, and enter the password designdeploy in the Password field. Click OK when you're done to close the Import Connection Key dialog box.

Notice a new entry in the My Connections dialog box that lists the Design_Deploy site.

10.

In the My Connections dialog box, click Close.

With the Contribute side of the equation in place, you're ready to work with SSIs from within Contribute.
