Bootstrap Protocol (BOOTP)

This is the Internet protocol used for booting diskless workstations. Among its functions, BOOTP:

  • Discovers its own IP address

  • Discovers the IP addresses of BOOTP servers on the network

  • Locates a file to be loaded into memory to boot the computer

  • Enables workstations to boot without a hard drive

The protocol is defined by RFC 951.

BOOTP can be configured in Network preferences.
