General Preferences

General options (Figure 8) control the general operation of Word:

• Background repagination paginates documents automatically as you work. (This option cannot be turned off in Page Layout view.)

• Include formatted text in Clipboard includes text formatting when you copy text to the Clipboard.

• Blue background, white text displays the document as white text on a blue backgroundlike the old WordPerfect software. (Why you'd want to do this is beyond me. Not only is it hard to read, but it's downright ugly!)

• Provide feedback with sound plays sound effects at the conclusion of certain actions or with the appearance of alerts.

• Provide feedback with animation displays special animated cursors while waiting for certain actions to complete.

• Confirm conversion at Open displays a dialog that you can use to select a converter when you open a file created with another application.

• Update automatic links at Open automatically updates linked information when you open a document containing links to other files.

• Recently used file list enables you to specify the number of recently opened files that should appear near the bottom of the File menu (Figure 9). This feature is handy for quickly reopening recently accessed files.

• WYSIWYG font and style menus displays the characters in font and style menus with the corresponding font and styles applied (Figures 10 and 11).

• Confirm launching applications in Open and New displays a confirmation dialog when you use the Open dialog or Project Gallery to open or create a non-Word document.

• Show Project Gallery at startup always displays the Project Gallery dialog when you launch Word by opening its application icon.

• Measurement units enables you to select the measurement unit used throughout Word. Options are Inches, Centimeters, Millimeters, Points, and Picas.

Web Options

Clicking the Web Options button displays the Web Options dialog (Figures 12 through 16), which has five different panes of options for creating and working with Web pages. Although these options are advanced and far beyond the scope of this book, here's a quick overview of each.

• General options (Figure 12) enable you to set a Web page title and keywords for the current document.

• Files options (Figure 13) control file saving options for Web pages.
