Troubleshooting Lab

On your own computer, perform the following actions so that you understand how they work:

  1. Visit the Windows Update website. Install all available critical updates on your computer. Scan through the list of Windows and driver updates available and install any that you think are necessary.

  2. After you are confident that your computer is updated, configure Automatic Updates so that Windows XP downloads and installs critical updates automatically each day at a time that is appropriate for you.

  3. Enable the Internet Connection Firewall on your Internet connection. Make sure that you allow traffic for any services you require.

  4. If you are running antivirus software, ensure that it is updated with the latest virus definitions. Scan your system for viruses and make sure that the antivirus software is configured to protect your system automatically. (If you do not have antivirus software, visit http://www.microsoft.com/security/protect/windowsxp/antivirus.asp for a list of recommended software.)

  5. Download and run MBSA (if you have not already) and follow its recommendations for increasing the security on your computer.
