1.7. Utilities

Even the most powerful operating system isn't worth much to the average user unless there is useful software available for it. Linux distributions come complete with at least two hundred small utility programs, including a couple of text editors, a C/C++ compiler, a sorting utility, a graphical user interface, several command shells, and text-processing tools. Through the open source movement and commercial resources, many other popular packages like spreadsheets, compilers, and desktop publishing tools are also available.
