The Road Goes Ever Onward</h2> <blockquote> <p><span>Thou ill- formed offspring of my feeble brain, Who after birth did'st by my side remain , Till snatcht from thence by friends , less wise than true, Who thee abroad exposed to public view; Made thee in rags, halting , to th' press to trudge, Where errors were not lessened, all may judge.</span></p> <p><span>Anne Bradstreet</span><br><span>The Author to Her Book</span></p> </blockquote> <p>There is an old Abbott and Costello routine that, on occasion, I go through with my children. In the routine, the owner of a local Italian restaurant, Mr. Bacciagalupe, offers Costello a meatball. When Costello tells Mr. Bacciagalupe that he doesn't like meatballs, the restaurateur reviews each individual ingredient of a meatball. With each ingredient, Mr. Bacciagalupe asks Costello if he likes that particular ingredient. Costello responds by saying that he likes the ingredient. The routine proceeds in a similar fashion through each ingredient. After Mr. Bacciagalupe reviews each of the ingredients, he concludes that when Costello must like meatballs because he likes all the ingredients, a piece of seemingly sound logic. Costello would of course reply that he doesn't like meatballs. Mr. Bacciagalupe would go ballistic , scatter the ingredients , and grab Costello by the throat. Lou Costello would utter his catch phrase in which he calls for help from Abbott. While my retelling of the act is not as funny as the act itself, it does show that the whole is very different from the sum of the parts .</p> <p>Throughout this book, we have presented IEBI as a solution, examining each ingredient. In Chapter 2, we discussed the Internet and its evolution; in Chapter 3 we discussed business intelligence in the Internet age. In later chapters, we discussed the enabling technologies: servers, networking, Java, XML, and CWMI. Finally, we discussed how we can use this technology to build mutually beneficial relationships with our customers. Like Mr. Bacciagalupe and Lou Costello, we have tasted each ingredient. It is now time to look at what we have created to see if the solution created by this recipe is palatable.</p> <img src="/books/2/551/1/html/2/images/pixel.gif" width="1" height="1" border="0"> </td></tr></table> <hr size="1"> <table width="100%" border="0" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="2"> <tr><td valign="top" height="5"><img src="/books/2/551/1/html/2/images/pixel.gif" width="1" height="5" alt="" border="0"></td></tr> <tr> <td><b><font size="1" color="#0000FF">Team-Fly<img border="0" src="/books/2/551/1/html/2/Fly-Logo.gif" width="81" height="25"></font></b></td> <td valign="top" align="right">     </td> </tr> </table> <table width="100%" border="0" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0"><tr><td valign="top" align="right">Top</td></tr></table> </td></tr></table></td> <td align="center">  </td> </tr> <tr><td colspan="3" align="center" valign="bottom"> <br><table width="100%"><tr><td height="25" valign="middle" colspan="4" align="center"> </td></tr></table> </td></tr> </table> </blockquote>
