5.1 The Server In Chapter 3, we discussed the IEBI loop. At the heart of this loop is the data warehouse. This centralized repository of information broadens the view of the IEBI system beyond the borders of our organization to span the breadth of the entire value chain. The system supporting this repository is a database server. This server is one of many in the IEBI loop. There are in fact multiple servers performing a variety of functions. The selection of which architecture we use for which function is a critical factor in the success of our implementation. In this section, we shall examine three architectures: mainframes, client/server, and Internet-enabled. You might wonder about the relevance of such a discussion. After all, haven't we already agreed that we are implementing Internet Enabled Business Intelligence? Well, actually, the story isn't as simple as that. No single architecture sits in isolation of others. Simply taking into consideration the systems already in place within the organization makes this discussion necessary. The examination of these structures has relevance to which architectures we choose to employ in our implementation. |
