Summary

In this chapter, we examined some ways to work with data in ASP.NET. We compared the Repeater, DataList, and DataGrid controls, and because the DataGrid in particular offers powerful support for templating, controlling styles, and editing, we walked through some of the more useful ways to take advantage of it. We also examined what is necessary for adding and deleting rows from the underlying data and how to filter and sort data. Finally, we looked at summarizing data dynamically.

Many Web sites are primarily driven by the need to access and modify back-end data. It pays to become proficient at enabling the user to manipulate data effectively, but be sure you understand the performance implications associated with working with large sets of data.
