Take 5

NOTE

Track 5: (Ch 5) Pizzicato Str

Sequence Parameters box: Qua 1/8 note

Instrument Parameter box: Cha 5, Prg 45

Transport Bar: (L) 49.1.1 (R) 53.1.1

Follow these steps:

  1. Record the pizzicato strings (Figures P5.15 and P5.16).

This figure is played at the beginning of the bar, just before the clarinet entry, and therefore avoids any confusion, that may have resulted, had we placed it elsewhere in the four bar cycle.

  1. Copy and paste the pizzicato sequence (bars 49 53) to bar 53. Glue the two sequences together.

  2. Copy and paste the resulting sequence to bar 57. Once again, we have two sequences.

  3. Transpose the second sequence (bars 57 65) down a perfect fourth (-5) using the Sequence Parameters box and Normalize it [Functions > Sequence Parameter > Normalize Sequence Parameters].

Our musical canvas is filling up nicely but the stereo picture needs sorting out. We need not make any final decisions just yet, so let's use the Instrument Parameter box to try out a few preliminary settings.

  1. Set the Locators between 49 and 65. Enable cycle and play.

  2. Using the Instrument Parameter box, separate the two virtual guitarists by panning the first to a value of 40 and the second to 88. Leave the strings in the center (64). Place the clarinettist at 48 and the pizzicato strings at 80. We now have quite a nice spread. Have a peek in the Track Mixer [Windows > Open Track Mixer] and you'll notice the changes reflected in the Pan settings (Figure P5.17).

  3. Set the Locators (L) 49.1.1 (R) 65.1.1, select all sequences [Edit > Select > Inside Locators], and copy and paste to bar 65.

  4. Save Song compare with project5/5.5.

It's all going swimmingly so far and there's room on our canvas for more. Something nautical? A fragment from a well-known sea shanty perhaps? The Drunken Sailor obviously! Played on the accordion? Of course!
