Chapter 11 -- Configuring Microsoft SQL Server on the Network

3 4

Chapter 11

After you have installed Microsoft SQL Server 2000, you must configure your system on the network. By now, you or the administrator of your Microsoft Windows NT or Microsoft Windows 2000 system has probably already configured the desired network protocol. If this has not been done, you can easily configure a network protocol via Control Panel. The protocol you choose is usually dictated by corporate guidelines or by other systems that are already configured on your network. Although some performance and functionality differences exist among the protocols, most protocols are adequate for your needs.

In this chapter, you'll learn how to configure the various networking components for SQL Server, including the network hardware layer, the network protocol layer, and the SQL Server net-library layer. In addition, you'll be introduced to the database connectivity components—DB-LIB, and Open Database Connectivity (ODBC)—as well as the ODBC connection-pooling features. Finally you will learn how to monitor the network to determine whether SQL Server is experiencing a network bottleneck.
