PPP Callback Configuration

Callback passes a command string back to an access server. This provides more security and allows you to initiate a callback string based on parameters given by the dialup client or from parameters in a Windows database. It is used in situations where you require the security of knowing the number you are calling back or even for the reversal of call charges. It is used in PPP connections for a number of reasons. When configuring callback options, you have three options:

  • The first is security. You can option to use the Windows NT/2000 callback settings for the entire group. This way you can specify specific numbers to call back. This is one way to ensure network security.

  • Another callback option you can choose is to allow the dialup client to specify the callback number. While this is not the most secure method, it allows the reversal of charges and connectivity to roaming users.

  • The third option of callback is to select the option No callback allowed, which disables callback features for the group.
