Sharing to GarageBand

Send your entire movie to GarageBand, where you can build music with the video as reference. This option is great for timing music cues with your movie.

To share your movie to GarageBand:

1.

To export only a few clips, select them in the Timeline (or the Clips pane). To export the entire movie, skip to step 2.

2.

Choose GarageBand from the Share menu, or press Command-Shift-E and click the GarageBand icon (Figure 14.1).

3.

Click the box labeled Share selected clips only to export the range you selected in step 1. Otherwise, ignore this step.

4.

Click the Share button. iMovie exports your movie and launches GarageBand, where the movie appears in a new video track (Figure 14.2).

Tips

  • All audio from your movie appears on one track in GarageBand, even if you had multiple tracks set up in iMovie. You may want to mute the Video Sound track while working on your score (Figure 14.3).

Figure 14.3. Make the Video Sound track silent so you can focus on building the score in other tracks.

  • Having your video appear within GarageBand is an enormous help, but it comes at a cost: even on fast machines, playback can be stuttery. GarageBand is simply a resource hog. You can regain some performance by locking audio tracks (click the padlock icon below the track name); this tells GarageBand to create a temporary "mixdown" of the locked tracks, which requires less processing power.

  • I'm just scratching the surface of GarageBand in these few pages. Be sure to read the program's online help, or pick up a good book (such as Peachpit's Apple Training Series: GarageBand 3).
