Creating Chapter Markers

When you watch a feature movie on DVD, you usually have the option of skipping to specific scenes, or chapters. You can set up chapter markers in iMovie that iDVD or video podcasts import as chapters.

To create a chapter marker:

1.

Place the Playhead at the point that you'd like to set as a marker.

2.

Switch to the Chapters pane.

3.

Click the Add Marker button; a thumbnail of the current frame appears in the list (Figure 18.1), and a yellow diamond appears in the Timeline Viewer (Figure 18.2).

4.

iMovie inserts the name of the current clip as the chapter name. If you want to call it something else, type a new name into the highlighted field.

5.

If you want a clickable URL to appear in a podcast, double-click the Link URL text and add a Web address.

Tips

  • You can't move a chapter marker to a new time location. Instead, simply create a new marker at the new location and delete the old marker.

  • Highlighting chapters in the Chapters pane is a fast way to reposition the Playhead in long movie projects. (Also see "Using Bookmarks" in Chapter 8.)

  • I love keyboard shortcuts. With a chapter highlighted in the Chapters pane, press the up or down arrow key to select the previous or next chapter. Press Return or Enter to make the chapter title editable. If the title is editable, you can press Tab to switch to the next chapter, or Shift-Tab to switch to the previous chapter.

Podcast URLs Not Quite Ready

As of iMovie HD 6.0.2, using podcast URLs in chapters is problematic, either crashing iMovie when exporting or just not including the URL. Stay away for now.
