Foreword

It is truly an exciting time for Sun and Microsoft. Since we announced our collaboration agreement in April 2004, we have made a lot of progress, especially in terms of Web single sign-on to Sun's Java Enterprise System and Microsoft's Windows Server. However, there is much more to interoperability than basic Web services integration. That's why Sun and Microsoft are working on ways for our partners and customers to streamline and automate business solutions developed in Java and .NET.

Our work together on single sign-on is essentially the resolution of what Sun has been doing with the Liberty Alliance and what Microsoft was trying to accomplish with Passport, and subsequently with WS-Federation. It makes it possible for a user to sign in once to either a Java service or a .NET service andto the extent that identity agreements are in place between subsequent servicesthe user will not be asked to sign in again.

As a growing number of companies deploy Java and .NET applications in their mission-critical production environments, we will continue to look for ways to benefit our mutual customers by eliminating gratuitous incompatibility and addressing manageability across the two platforms.

This book is a developer handbook for implementing interoperable applications and services. It includes actionable strategies for developers and best practices from the field experience.

Thanks to Marina Fisher, Ray Lai, Sonu Sharma, and Laurence Moroney, you now hold in your hands an arsenal of integration solutions and strategies to address everyday Java .NET interoperability issues.
