Summary

This chapter has supplied sample strategies on how to develop Data Access Layer and perform legacy integration in a heterogeneous Java EE.NET environment. The purpose of this discussion is not only to enable developers with effective means to build interoperability at the Data Access Layer, but also to ensure that at the architecture level, presentation and business logic are separated from the underlying Resource tier integration. This approach simplifies manageability, security, and interoperability of the overall system.

While synchronous integration with back-end resources is useful, it might be decided that integrating with the Resource tier in an asynchronous manner is more efficient for the application throughput and the end user response time. Therefore, the discussion on the Resource tier integration continues in Chapter 10.
