The Power of Fundamentals

Why is it that "fundamentals" has such a negative connotation? Where's the "fun" in fundamentals? When we think of fundamentals, we usually think of words like tiresome and boring. It's really all in how you look at it. The fun part comes once you understand how to do something and see the rewards you'll get from doing that thing really well. There is a built-in excitement, enthusiasm, and satisfaction that goes along with accomplishing a difficult task. Then, when you're confronted with a similar task, it's possible to stop and say, "Wait a minute. I know how to do this!"

Successful people know how to build strong foundations. They reach such depths of skill and knowledge that they cannot be knocked over by any storm. They understand that the "fun" comes after the fundamentals; once you have the basics down, you know the secret to success. It's hard work, plain and simple.

In order to build a foundation, you have to start digging. You have to take up that shovel and move that dirt around. There's no other way. And when things go wrong, when you feel the walls crumbling around you, you have to go back and shore up the foundation once again.

That's what works for me. When things are hectic, when I'm burnt out, when I have five different projects happening at once, I take a step back and determine what is most important to me at that moment. I have to decide which project needs the most of my time based upon the amount of effort necessary and the rewards to be gained. Once I make that decision, I get down to the fundamentals—writing letters, making phone calls, following up, checking all the details. And when I've completed these fundamental actions to the best of my ability, I know that I will be successful. It's the fundamental process of hard work and determination that gives me the strongest foundation from which to work.

Build your empire on the firm foundation of the fundamentals.
