In this chapter, you are introduced to mobile device development. You learn about the Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) and the Wireless Markup Language (WML), which is the most common development protocol and language used for mobile devices (at the time of writing). You are also introduced to a newer and more flexible way to develop mobile-device applications using XHTML Basic.
XHTML Basic is a cut-down version of XHTML. It's been specifically designed for use with mobile devices, such as mobile phones and PDAs.
After these two technologies are introduced and explained, you then look at a simple mobile-device application that uses some of the XML and XSL techniques that are shown throughout this book.
This sample application uses XML as a data source and multiple .xslt files for rendering either XHTML or WML content to mobile devices.
In this chapter, you learn the following:
The history of WAP
What WML is
XHTML Basic
You also practice using these tools by doing work with a sample application.
