So far the ColdFusion templates you've built have been designed to handle only one set of circumstances. That is, you built them to perform a set of actions one after another, in a linear fashion, without having to make any decisions along the way. But because CFML is a programming language, you may have guessed that it has additional tools that enable you to handle multiple conditions.
In this chapter, you learn how to use a powerful family of tags called <cfif>, first to display a custom greeting based on your user's referring URL, and later, to build a simple, form-based poll allowing users to record their opinions on an issue.
