The Timeline controls all the timing, which determines how long your movie plays, when it plays, what plays, and basically everything involved in producing your Flash movie. What the viewer sees from the time the movie starts to when it stops is determined by where you place the content on the Timeline.
The Timeline sits on top of the stage area of your movie. Figure 27-1 shows the Timeline, which sits on the top of the stage by default.

You can reposition the Timeline by clicking and dragging the gripper. It comes in handy to be able to move the Timeline when you have two monitors; then you can move the Timeline off the stage altogether onto a separate monitor. It's a great way to view all the layers at the same time.
