With the explosion of Web-based technology, technologists face the ever-mounting difficulty of finding a secure and easy method to publish data to sites. Many large ISPs and corporations use the File Transfer Protocol (FTP) to provide a relatively simplistic method to accomplish this task.

Microsoft has exposed over 60 properties to programmatically manipulate the configuration and operation of the IIS FTP service. Whether implemented as a standalone FTP site or as part of a complex Web publishing mechanism, you can use ADSI to determine property inheritance and to programmatically administer the following:

• The FTP Site property sheet

• The Security Accounts property sheet

• The Messages property sheet

• The Home Directory property sheet

• The Directory Security property sheet

This chapter covers in detail some techniques you can use to programmatically administer the IIS FTP service.
