11.1 Overview

Domino 6.5 is the first release of Domino to run on Linux on zSeries, either natively, or in an LPAR, or under z/VM. In this chapter, we describe the process for performing capacity planning for Domino on Linux workloads based on knowledge of the environment and tests performed during our redbook project. Since there is no great library of information about capacity requirements for Domino for Linux on zSeries under z/VM, there are still many unknowns.

During this project, we made several measurements at load levels that we expected would run without resource constraints, in order to obtain some baseline knowledge for our performance analysis and capacity planning. We did not use a true production workload, which has a mix of many types of users. In production, workloads and requirements change from installation to installation and even from department to department.

In our case, the workload consisted of hundreds of Notesbench (simulated) users who were constantly accessing the server—not comparable to the ebb and flow of a production workload. The purpose of these measurements is to show a methodology for understanding performance.

All of the measurements in this chapter were made on Linux systems running under z/VM.
