A - aftertouch
MIDI data type generated by pressure on keys after they have been struck. Aftertouch is also known as pressure.
- AIFF
Audio Interchange File Format. A cross-platform file format supported by a large number of digital video and audio editing applications. AIFF audio can use a variety of bit depths, but the two most commonly used are 16 bit and 24 bit.
- alias
An object in the Arrange window that mirrors a MIDI Region someplace else. You cannot edit an alias, only a real Region, but any change to the Region will be reflected in the alias. To create an alias, Option-Shift-drag the original MIDI Region to a new location.
- Anchor point
A temporal reference point, or the point Logic uses to snap a Region to the Arrange window's time grid. In the Audio window and Sample Editor, the Anchor is represented by a small triangle under the Region.
- Apple Loops
Audio files in which recurring rhythmic musical elements or elements suitable for repetition are recorded. Apple Loops have tags that allow Logic to perform time stretching and pitch shifting. These tags also allow you to quickly locate files by instrument, genre, or mood in the Loop Browser.
- arming
Enabling a track to be recorded.
- Arrange window
The heart of Logic. The primary working window of the program where Audio and MIDI Regions are edited and moved to create a song arrangement.
- Arrow tool
The default selection tool, shaped like an arrow. It is in every window's toolbox. In the Logic reference manual it is sometimes called the Pointer tool.
- audio file
Any digital audio recording stored on your hard disk. The default storage format for audio files in Logic is AIFF, but you can store audio files in the Sound Designer II and WAV formats as well.
- Audio Instrument
A software instrument. In Logic, software instrument plug-ins are inserted into Audio Instrument Objects. Software instrument recording takes place on Audio Instrument tracks in the Arrange window. Playback of these tracks is routed via the Audio Instrument Object.
- audio interface
A device that converts sound between the digital and analog domains.
- Audio Object
An Object found in Logic's Environment that shows Logic where to send audio signals. It can assume the form of any audio channel available to your systema track channel, an Audio Instrument channel, a bus, or an output. When it's expanded, an Audio Object looks like a channel strip on a standard hardware mixing console.
- Audio Region
Chosen area of an audio file that is registered in the Audio window for use in the song and that can be placed on audio tracks in the Arrange window, just as a MIDI Region can be placed on MIDI tracks. Audio Regions are pointers to portions of audio files. You can use all of Logic's tools to edit Audio Regions. Editing is nondestructive to the original audio file. - See also [Region]
- See also [MIDI Region]
- audio track
A track in Logic's Arrange window used for the playback, recording, and editing of Audio Regions.
- Audio window
Logic window used to add audio files from your hard disks to your song. You can use this window to rename audio files and Regions, to optimize files, and to change your song's sampling rate.
- Autodrop mode
When engaged, this mode forces Logic to automatically start and stop recording at predefined positions. Typically, it's used to re-record a badly played passage in a recording that's fine otherwise. This technique is also called punching in/out - See also [punch in/out]
- Autoload Song
A song with your favorite settings and preferred window layouts. It loads automatically when you launch Logic and serves as a starting point for your songs and projects.
- automation
The ability to record, edit, and play back the movements of all knobs and switches, including volume faders and Pan, EQ, and Aux Send controls.
- Automation Quick Access
A Logic feature that assigns a slider or knob on your hardware MIDI controller keyboard to modify Track Automation data.
- Aux
An Auxiliary Object, either mono or stereo, in the Audio layer of the Environment. The Aux Object serves as a way to monitor an audio signal in Logic without recording it.
