The first part of this chapter shows you various techniques for generating SVG documents via Perl scripts and Unix shell scripts that can be invoked manually from the command line for your PC or in a Unix environment. Such scripts can also be executed on a regularly scheduled basis through some type of scheduler (e.g., the Unix cron utility). If you are unfamiliar with Perl, you can read the Perl appendix (Appendix C) in the back of this book. The second part of this chapter contains examples of applying XSLT to XML documents in order to generate SVG documents. If you are unfamiliar with XSLT, you might want to read the accompanying appendix. All code and images for this chapter can be found on the companion CD-ROM in the Chapter 17 folder.
