Networking is inherently insecure, since it involves connecting machines to other machines, and trusting both the software and the operators associated with those other machines.
You can take certain steps to make a network more secure. The first steps are easy, but the more steps you take, the harder and more expensive it gets to take further steps. You'll never get all the pits ground out of your speckled axe head, and at some point you simply have to make a decision that your network is as secure as you really need it to be, given who you are and what your network contains.
To make that decision, you need to have a reasonable grasp of the threats involved in having a network. And the best place to start is with our mythic enemy, the hacker.
