Logging into Another Node

Use the "SET HOST node" command to log into another DECnet node. The remote node will prompt you for a username, just as if you were logging in locally:

$ SET HOST BAXTER Unauthorized access strictly prohibited. Username: mike Password: Welcome to OpenVMS (TM) VAX Operating System, Version V7.3 on node BAXTER Last interactive login on Thursday, 16-JAN-2003 16:11 Last non-interactive login on Thursday, 16-JAN-2003 17:16 $

You may now use BAXTER just as if you were logged in locally. In reality, your local node accepts your keystrokes and forwards them to BAXTER. Similarly, output from BAXTER is passed back to your local node to be displayed on your terminal.

When you are finished using the remote node, log out. A logout message will appear, followed by a message indicating that control has been returned to the original node:

$ LOGOUT MIKE logged out at 16-JAN-2003 17:22:13.50 %REM-S-END, control returned to node PHOEBE:: $

Note

SET HOST can also be used to dial out through a modem connected to a terminal port. This command takes the form SET HOST/DTE device.
