Resolution

Bug 1151988 included a stack traceback that almost exactly matched the symptoms we saw here. The patch #102010-01 README file explicitly noted that this particular bug was fixed by that patch. The patch was delivered to the customer, who applied it to the system. Extensive use of the network gave no further problems in this area ( especially no further panics), and the system stabilized. Problem solved !
