The final case study, and other examples, demonstrates some of the limitations and vulnerabilities of classful routing protocols. Chapter 7, "Routing Information Protocol Version 2," presents RIPv2, the first of the classless protocols. More important, Chapter 7 discusses how classless protocols overcome such problems as discontiguous subnets and segmented networks and how their support of variable-length subnet masking allows more efficient address space design.
