5. Ready, Set, Goals

For each desired result requiring you to take a specific action, prepare a Goal Worksheet. Be clear, concise, and real about your goals. Also, be certain to allow for additional support, internal or external, to assist you in reaching your goals. Next, determine your deadline, remembering that it is easier to learn new skills and develop visibility before the need arises. Then prepare a calendar of the tasks and supporting activities, and you are ready to go.

If your company does not support promoting those who are ready, willing, and able to learn, you can work on acquiring the required skills and education while

  1. Keeping an eye on the next round of promotions

  2. Looking for a sensible lateral move to improve your breadth of knowledge

  3. Looking outside of your organization for a job you would love

  4. Doing all of the above
