Know what device drivers are. Device drivers enable Solaris to communicate with hardware devices. To work with Solaris, the driver must be specifically written for Solaris.

Know how to display system configuration information. The three commands used to display system hardware configuration are prtconf, sysdef, and dmesg.

Understand what cfgadm is used for. The cfgadm command is used to manage hot-swapping and hot-plugging devices in Solaris 9.

Know what devfsadm manages. devfsadm manages the /devices and /dev directories, and the /etc/path_to_inst file.

Know where raw and block disk device names are stored. Raw disk names are located in the /dev/rdsk directory, and block names are in the /dev/dsk directory.

Know how to display the disk's Volume Table of Contents. The VTOC is displayed with the prtvtoc command. The same information can also be gathered from the format partition print command.

Know what can be done from the format command. The format command is very versatile. It's options are disk, type, partition, current, format, repair, show, label, analyze, defect, backup, verify, save, and volname. Be sure to recognize the menu when you see it.
