AutoFilters are a more advanced type of filter that use features from both interactive and highlighting filter types. With AutoFilters, you can filter information by each field in a view.

1. Make sure the project is in Resource Sheet view.

   You can use AutoFilter with tasks or resources, but we'll use resources for this lesson.

2. Select Project All of the resources remain on the screen, but look at the top row that contains all the field headings: list arrows appear on the right side of the headings. These lists include each entry in the field.

3. Click the Resource Name list arrow.

   A list of all the resource names drops down. Other columns don't have as many entries.

4. Click outside the Resource Name list to close it.

   Try another field.

5. Click the Type list arrow.

   Only four entries appear: Work, Material, All, and Custom.

6. Select Work from the list.

   Only the work resources appear in the project window. Notice that the Type heading appears in blue, indicating that is has been used as filter criteria.

   AutoFilters are useful because they are easy to use, especially if you are searchinga for specific information. For example, you can filter the material list you just created so it is even more specific.

7. Click the Group list arrow. Select Narration from the list, as shown in Figure 4-7.

   Now the project is filtered so that the only resources shown are work resources used for narration, as shown in Figure 4-8.

   When you're done, don't forget to turn off the AutoFilter...

8. Select Project The filters you specified are turned off, and all the resources are shown once again.

QUICK REFERENCE

TO USE THE AUTOFILTER:

1. SELECT PROJECT

   CLICK THE LIST ARROW OF THE FIELD BY WHICH YOU WANT TO FILTER THE PROJECT.

2. FROM THE LIST, SELECT THE CRITERIA BY WHICH YOU WANT TO FILTER THE PROJECT.
