Photoshop to Illustrator
Q1:

How do I move artwork from Photoshop to Illustrator?

A1:

There are a number of options:

  • Save as a PSD file in Photoshop (File>Save As and choose Photoshop [PSD] from the Format pop-up menu) and open it in Illustrator. You'll have the option of converting Photoshop layers to objects (and making the text editable where possible) or flattening Photoshop layers into a single image. The document is not linked back to the original because you are working on an Illustrator "version" of the PSD file.

  • Save as a PSD file in Photoshop (File>Save As and choose Photoshop [PSD] from the Format pop-up menu), and then go to File>Place in Illustrator. Check the Links palette (Window>Links) to ensure there's a "live" link to the PSD file, and then hold down Option (PC: Alt) and double-click on the placed file with the Selection tool (V) to switch back to Photoshop to edit the original. Note: If the Photoshop document includes layer comps , you can choose which one you want to use as you're placing the file.

  • Copy your selected image (Edit>Copy) in Photoshop and paste (Edit>Paste) in Illustrator. A flattened version of the layered document will be embedded in the Illustrator file. (Choose Edit>Copy Merged in Photoshop to copy the pixels on all visible layers.)

  • Drag-and-drop an image from Photoshop into an open Illustrator document. A flattened version of the layered image will be embedded in the Illustrator file. (You can also just select the layers you want to drag-and-drop.)

  • Drag-and-drop a Photoshop (PSD) file from Bridge into an open Illustrator document.

Q2:

Can I work with Photoshop layers in Illustrator?

A2:

When you open a layered Photoshop file in Illustrator, you'll be offered the choice of flattening the image or converting the layers to objects. It's not exactly the same as working with layers in Photoshop

Q3:

How do I use a different layer comp once I've placed a PSD file in Illustrator?

A3:

You can do this in a couple of ways:

  • Hold down Option (PC: Alt) and with the Selection tool (V), double-click on the PSD file to open the file in Photoshop. Choose a different layer comp, save the document, and return to Illustrator, where the placed file will update.

  • In the Links palette (under the Window menu), click the Relink icon to open the Place dialog and choose the same file. Then in the second dialog, pick a different layer comp from the Layer Comp pop-up menu, making sure that you choose When Updating Link Use Photoshop's Layer Visibility from the pop-up menu.

Q4:

Can I use a Photoshop path in Illustrator?

A4:

After creating (and naming) your path in Photoshop, use File>Export>Paths to Illustrator. In the Export Paths dialog, name the path and click Save to save it as an .ai file (if you have multiple paths in one document, you'll have to choose which path to save from the Paths pop-up menu). Once you open the file in Illustrator, you'll probably see only crop marks. Go to View>Outline to see the path.
