Chapter 11: Introduction to Music and Sound Effects

Although a good concept and good graphics for your game are very important components in the game development process, they are not enough in a competitive marketplace. Music and sound effects have very important supporting roles in a completely successful game. Music and sound effects should convey information that helps set up a level without being overwhelming to a player.

In this chapter, you’ll be introduced to ACID, which will be used to create the music loops we’ll use in our game. Adobe Audition, which will be covered in the next chapter, will be used for recording and editing the sound effects.

Introduction to ACID

ACID is perhaps the easiest to use loop-based music-creation tool ever created and can be used in many game development projects. As far as software goes, it is undoubtedly one of the easiest tools to simply pick up and use. Before we begin using the software, we’ll look at the installation process and the user interface. Finally, we’ll make a simple loop for our project.

Note

During the writing of this book, Sony acquired ACID from Sonic Foundry. Some of the figures may be slightly different from the versions you will find available in any newly released versions from Sony.
