Begin a New Internet Journey

By now you might feel a little overwhelmed. You might have been "hit" by scams, snarled in spam, harassed by Internet road ragers, carjacked by criminals, or just offended by content you'd rather not have seen. Perhaps you never considered that you'd better look both ways before going online, nor stopped to teach yourself or your family how to navigate the Internet safely.

Hopefully, this book has been useful in providing a sense of confidence so you can use great products and services comfortably, and reject products that do not meet your safety demands. Perhaps you've gained some insight about how to experience all the Web has to offeron your terms.

The Web will continue to change as new products and services are developed and refined. As it does, simply remember these guidelines:

  • Consider what you share, and with whom you share it.

  • Look not only at what opportunities products make possible, but also at how they might be used by a potential predator.

  • Understand the motivation of sites and other users you interact with.

  • If a deal sounds to good to be true, it probably is.

If you follow these simple guidelines, you'll have significantly decreased your risks.

Many of you might still have questions, and I will try to answer them through my Web site, www.look-both-ways.com. This is a free, public service site dedicated to helping individuals navigate the Web safely. Questions and answers are posted on the Web site so that you can search through what others have asked and learn more.

I also post additional safety information on the site: examples for you to practice with, templates you might want to use, and articles on topics covered in this book and on new technologies. Refer back to the site whenever you have a question and to get information on new technologies and how to use them safely.
