Chapter Eighteen. It Takes Everyone to Make a Safe Internet

Think about the ways in which you try to protect yourself and others every day. You lock your doors. You don't talk to suspicious-looking strangers on the street, and you teach your children not to talk to strangers. You create neighborhood watches. If you see somebody being mugged or attacked, you call the police and find help for the victim. If a small child is standing at a crosswalk on a busy street, you might offer to help that child cross safely.

Being able to help others is part of what makes people civilized, and it feels good to make these connections with others. So how do you apply these social principles to become a good Net citizen? You learn how to help yourself, your family, and others to overcome the risks on the Internet. When you discover that you are not alone, that you have already learned basic safety skills in other parts of your life, that there is educational material to help you, and that you are part of an online community where people can support each other, you will begin to take charge of your online experience.

The majority of the online population is made up of good, well--intentioned people just like you. Learning to take safety precautions and working with each other, with Internet companies, with schools, with community groups, and with law enforcement will help make the Internet a safer place.
