Chapter Eight. Step 5: Don't Expose Yourself Through Instant Messaging

Jim just started working in the accounting department at an international high-tech company. Coming from a job in the more conservative publishing industry, he was impressed by all the technology people used in their work. The company provided all employees in his division with smartphones or PDAs for instant messaging, accessing the company's wire-less network to read e-mail on the run, and tracking contacts and appointments.

By the end of his second week, Jim had received many requests from people asking to be on his IM buddy list, so getting two more wasn't surprising. Thinking these were from co-workers, he clicked Accept. When he turned on the phone Saturday morning to show his 10-year-old daughter all the cool stuff it could do, he noticed that his new "buddies" were online. He clicked on the profile of one, and was surprised to be taken to a teen-girl's blog with definite sexual overtones. He quickly went to his settings to block that buddy from future contact. While blocking the first contact, a message appeared from the other one: "Hi, cute guy. Wanna party?"

Embarrassed in front of his daughter, Jim immediately blocked that contact as well and deleted both, explaining sheepishly that he had made a mistake by letting those people on his IM list. Then he went in search of his wife to tell her what had happenedbefore their daughter did.
