Chapter Four. Step 1: Be Careful What You Show People

Brittany runs up the front steps and dashes in the front door of her house one afternoon, excited because her mom was going to make a trip to the electronics superstore that day to buy a new digital camera. They've been talking about getting a better one for ages, but they finally saw this model on sale with all the cool features her mom and dad liked and they decided to buy it.

While her mom studies the manual, Brittany puts on her favorite sweater and jeans. Her mom takes a picture of Brittany posing in front of their house leaning on their car.

She's always been a little shy about having her picture taken, but because she's wanted to post some photos on her new blog, she's a little excited, too. She set up her blog to make it available to anybody so she could meet lots of new people. All her new online "friends" will now be able to see her house and what she looks like. Brittany also snapped a photo of the store across the street because she had talked about it in a recent blog entry.

With the camera in hand, Brittany heads upstairs to the spare bedroom where they keep the computer, opens up her blog, and uploads the pictures from the new camera. She adds a few comments, and then logs off.

Later that evening, a man sits at his computer a few towns away. Within a few minutes of opening Brittany's blog, he knows the town she lives in, her street address, and phone number. He also knows her age and interestsplenty of information to aid him in locating and grooming his next victim.
