About the Authors

Linda Criddle is an active mother of four and a 13-year Microsoft Corp. veteran. As senior product manager for child safety, she works on developing child safety strategy for MSN and Windows Live, participates in Microsoft-wide child safety planning, identifies emerging risks to adults and children on the Internet, drives the MSN and Windows Live abuse prevention and monitoring strategy, helps develop safety messaging within MSN and Windows Live Products, and creates safety solutions for end users and technologies. Linda lectures and advises on Internet child safety risks internationally. She also trains product teams, and speaks about Internet child safety at conferences and universities, and for school districts, parent groups, teens, and law enforcement. Linda has codeveloped more than 30 patents on Internet safety and emerging technologies for Microsoft. Prior to her current position, Linda worked for MSN as a product planner. In that role, she worked on the company's vision for mobile services and helped define new features for MSN Mobile services releases and represented Microsoft at mobile Internet safety conferences internationally. Since joining Microsoft, Linda has also worked with Microsoft's Consumer Products Group, worked on the development of Microsoft's internal e commerce tools, and was a senior financial analyst for the Office Division. Linda grew up in California, and then lived and worked in Kristiansand, Norway, for 15 years before joining Microsoft. In Norway, she was active in city politics and a member of the Kristiansand City Council. During that time she served as vice chair of the council's environmental committee and sat on committees for tourism and education. She also has a background in investigative journalism, and has covered business, economic, and political issues. Linda lives in the Seattle area.

Nancy Muir is the author of over 50 books on technology and the Internet (some under the name Nancy Stevenson), including Distance Learning Online For Dummies (Wiley Publishing, Inc.) and 10 Minute Guide to Motivating People (Alpha Books). She recently won a Benjamin Franklin first place award for her book Young Person's Character Education Handbook (JIST Publishing, Inc.) from the Independent Book Publishers Association. Nancy has taught technical writing at the university level and, prior to her freelance writing career, worked as a manager in both the book publishing and software industries.
