Chapter 5. Web Services |
Web services is an effort to take the Web from a content delivery network for server-human interaction to a network for server-to-server interaction where software packaged as services can be registered, discovered , and connected to. At the heart of Web services is a repository for maintaining information about services and two key protocols, UDDI for registration and discovery and WSDL for figuring out how to connect to existing services. But UDDI and WSDL are not the only ways to give structure to the decentralized, distributed Web space made possible by SOAP. For example, ebXML builds on UDDI and SOAP to structure business data exchange around business processes and semantics that allow companies of all sizes to leverage the power of the Web. Also, as Web services mature and proliferate, intermediaries acting as Web service hubs will emerge that will insert themselves between service consumers and providers. Such hubs will act as agents and brokers , utilizing UDDI and WSDL while presenting a simple service interface to their clients . |
