This has been a very short introduction to fundamental but relatively straightforward ways of thinking about and describing the mentoring phenomenon. There are other descriptive models well worth a look - in particular, Carter and Levis's (1994) notion of mentoring contexts - and some of these are to be found in the recommended further reading in the Bibliography. From my experience, however, the three models described in this chapter provide a very effective means of focusing both mentor and mentee on pragmatic expectations, both of each other and of the mentoring process.
